When creating a new listing webpage

1. Please check with the alphabetic listing "all names and icons" page first for the official name and copy it exactly. If you can find a link to an active travelling coin put a link there ( enter the name into geocaching.com/track and look around for one )

2. From the left column menu select the appropriate letter of the alphabet and insert a new page (as a subpage) using a template from the dropdown menu

3. Include descriptive "keyword tags" ( see available tags below - or if you add a new tag make sure to add it to this home page so it can be searched easily)

The Enigma Geocoin Challenge by the mars bars
"Inspired by the film, of the Robert Harris novel “Enigma”, starring Dougray Scott and Kate Winslet I decided to create an open-ended series of puzzle caches based around the use of an Enigma machine. Browsing the web I stumbled across a superb piece of freeware, created by Dirk Rijmenants, a cryptography expert and software designer based in Belgium. It suited my purpose perfectly. Whilst playing with the html code for my original enigmacaching.org.uk website, Dirk contacted me, he was genuinely intrigued by the whole Geocaching scene and has since sent me details of another code breaking, machine emulator, the BC-52 that he felt could be used for a similar purpose. He was also kind enough to proof read the code on the coin before production and I will be sending a coin for him to keep as a token of my appreciation. I didn’t want the puzzles to be to be too difficult and so the first two or three caches were designed to educate participants rather than test them. The first cache was in fact called “Enigma One [Training Program]” The early caches depended on cachers deciphering a password set in Morse code, embedded as a sound file on the GC.com cache page. This password was then entered on the original enigmacaching website and the machine settings retrieved from here. Later on, authentic looking codebooks were introduced; each wrapped in brown paper with Hessian string and stenciled “Top Secret”. These were obtained from a cache contained within a dummy electrical enclosure, bolted to my factory gatepost. The participants set their machines from this depending on the caches date of publication. The caches were released sporadically, generally about a week or so apart and majored on cunning urban hides. The series soon acquired a dedicated following of so called “agents” competing for the prized FTF. Cache logs embellished with Enigma code and talk of “missions being accomplished” were adding to the general fervor. The next development was a breeder cache. By now the regulars were quite adept in the use of the machine, so eight ready made micros were placed inside with instructions that they should be taken by anyone willing to hide and publish them using Enigma code. These were named “Sleeper Cells” and numbered 001-008 …Little did anyone realize at the time, that each one contained a piece of information that would be required to find the final part. The final cache to date was a full sized briefcase hidden under a boardwalk. It went live during an event that I’d organized for the occasion called Enigma [RVP], RVP being military code for “Rendezvous Point”. The series eventually extended to nine Enigma caches and eight “Sleeper Cells” plus an event. Unfortunately after the initial excitement the caches were rarely found and due to their complexity they are not really suited to visitors passing through the area. Many people from all over the world however solved the first three puzzles and even though they would never be able to visit the area, or claim a find, requested that I send them codebooks so that they could “virtually” continue the series…. This I found most gratifying. I designed the coin to complement the series but it has been on the back burner for over a year now, so alas the caches have all been archived. However I feel that the coin has a greater purpose as a lasting reminder of the great work undertaken by the British and Allied Forces code-breakers based at Station-X, Bletchley Park, England during WW2. It has been estimated that their skill in deciphering the German codes shortened the war by two years thus saving many thousands of lives. A new cache is soon to go live in the North West of England. To find it you will have to crack the code on the coin. So dust off your code breaking kit….”M” is back."

The v1 coin was made in 2007 and 30 antique finish LE coins sold on ebay. reminted in 2009 in Copper. The design is now retired. Leonardo da Vinci’s life and works are full of mysteries. Leonardo was arguably, the greatest genius of all time. Much of his written work was encrypted to avoid intellectual theft. His legacy includes a long list of inventions that revolutionized the world we live in, although most were never built during his lifetime. Rumor has it that he intentionally built errors into sketches of his inventions, to thwart anyone who might try to steal his ideas. This coin set is dedicated to Leonardo, and the many mysteries woven into the fabric of his life.

Leonardo and Geocoins

*One of da Vinci’s more obscure inventions, which is of particular interest to the geocoin collectors among us, is the Screw Press depicted on the back of the Vitruvian Coin. The Screw Press was designed to imprint images on both sides of a coin, while at the same time, trimming the edge of the coin to produce a refined rim. Prior to this method of coin manufacturing, coins were essentially images hammered into a chunk of metal, leaving a bumpy edge around the outside of the coin. In the days of unrefined coins, it was common practice for thieves to remove shavings or chunks of precious metal from the edges of coins, which could later be melted down and sold. Removal of small portions from unrefined coin edges was difficult to detect, but eventually the coins were whittled down to nothing. The concept introduced by Leonardo’s Screw Press put an end to coin shaving. Imagine where we would be as geocoin collectors without Leonardo’s vision of the Screw Press.

The Contest

In the spirit of Leonardo, this coin set is rife with encryptions and cyphers. Some of those encryptions and cyphers lead to dead ends (kind of like da Vinci’s intentional built-in flaws on his invention sketches); others will lead to key words/phrases. These coins were designed using multi-level encryption, so if you decipher a single phrase on the coin, it is not likely to be the ultimate keyword/phrase you are looking for, but will probably help you solve the next stage of the puzzle. I will not reveal the exact number of keywords/phrases that you are looking for, however this information can be deciphered from the coins. Keywords/phrases could be anything: quotes, names, places, locations, items, etc. (these are just examples; don’t waste your time looking for each of these, as the actual keywords/phrases may or may not fit into these specific categories). All keywords/phrases are directly related to da Vinci and/or this coin set (i.e. Spiderman or the Detroit Red Wings aren't going to be answers, because they have nothing to do with da Vinci or this coin set). You will need information from all 3 coins to decipher the keywords/phrases. Warning - This contest is not intended to be easy. Just as da Vinci’s life is still largely a mystery, there is a chance that the answer to this puzzle may go to the grave with me. Not even my friends at TheCachingPlace.com knows the answer to this puzzle.

What's at stake?

Two sets of trackable Ultra-Limited Edition Copper da Vinci Coins will be awarded in this contest. Only 10 sets of copper coins were minted. One set will be awarded to the first person to correctly provide all of the keywords/phrases. The second set will be awarded via a random drawing of all entrants. In the event that no one correctly provides all keywords/phrases by the end of the contest on July 20, 2007, the person with the most correct keywords/phrases will be awarded the winner’s set of copper coins.

This coin is a tribute to Sir Isaac Newton, one of the greatest scientists of all time and a place associated with him. Every detail symbolizes something including the enamel colors. Front: Trinity side (refers to Trinity College where Newton was educated.)

3D image fountain in THE GREAT COURT AT TRINITY COLLEGE, Cambridge UK,
text "HVIII MDXLVI" and three lines from Tennyson's poem "the two voices" - Tennyson is another notable Trinity alumnus:

The college was founded by Henry VIII in 1546 - referenced by the roman numerals HVIII MDXLV. The edge on the "Trinity" side is made up of a triangle ("Trinity"), a cam, and a bridge = Cambridge. The cam rotates as you look round the edge, though this didn't come out as clearly on the coin as it was on the design! There were supposed to be 27 (three to the third power - another "trinity" reference") repetitions of those three icons, but the coin minters couldn't have got all those in. There are 27 repetitions of the pattern on the other side, which is a reference to Newton's work on optics - the triangles there are prisms.

BACK:The diagram on the other side refers to Kepler's three laws of planetary motion, which Newton showed how to deduce as just consequences of his, more fundamental, three laws of motion. So the three "Law" words on that side refer to Kepler as well as Newton, and to the fact that Newton "trumped" Kepler.

Apple = Newton himself often told the story that he was inspired to formulate his theory of gravitation by watching the fall of an apple from a tree.A descendant of the original tree can be seen growing outside the main gate of Trinity College, Cambridge, below the room Newton lived in when he studied there.

Interestingly in later life Newton was in charge of England's coinage as "master of the mint".
